Cosmetic Crown Lengthening

Do you think your teeth look too small? Do you see more gums than you’d like to when you smile? If you answered yes to these questions, you may be a good candidate for cosmetic crown lengthening.

What is Cosmetic Crown Lengthening?

Cosmetic crown lengthening, which is sometimes called a gum lift, is a cosmetic dental procedure that exposes more of your teeth by removing excess gum tissue. This procedure eliminates the amount of gum tissue visible when you smile, making your teeth look longer and more proportioned. Cosmetic crown lengthening can also be used to correct an uneven gum line, giving you a more symmetrical smile.

How is Cosmetic Crown Lengthening performed?

Cosmetic crown lengthening is an oral surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. Once the area is numbed, dentist will make small incisions in your gums to pull excess gum tissue away from your teeth. For some patients, dentist may also need to remove a small amount of bone that is covering the crown. Once the necessary amount of gum and bone tissue has been removed, doctor will cleanse and suture the treated area.
For a few days after your cosmetic crown lengthening surgery, you will be restricted to a soft food diet and need to take care when brushing your teeth as to not harm the area. Most patients require only a mild pain reliever like Tylenol or Advil following the procedure and feel fine after a few days. A follow-up appointment is required a week after the procedure to check on healing.

What are the benefits of Cosmetic Crown Lengthening?

In addition to providing you with a more cosmetically appealing smile, cosmetic crown lengthening can benefit your overall dental health. By exposing more of your tooth, more of your teeth will be reached by brushing and flossing, reducing the risk of tooth decay.
